The first snowfall of 2025 in the province of Alicante has created truly cinematic scenes with the main peaks of the region covered in a white blanket. But the snow has not only surprised people.
The storm has left Aitana Safari snow-covered, creating a movie-like scene with animals from five continents such as elephants, zebras, giraffes, or lions enjoying this white landscape. It was during Friday and Saturday morning that this curious and rare sight could be seen in the enclosure.
The animal reserve is located at 1,000 meters above sea level, above the snow line that the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) had forecast for these cold days that have brought frost and snow to the province of Alicante.
Elephants have been seen picking up snow with their trunks or curious feline cubs rolling in the snow. Other species, like wolves, are more adapted to these temperatures and have enjoyed the "refreshing" walk through these areas.
The Aitana Safari Park spans over 1.5 million square meters where visitors can drive through to see animals in freedom or semi-freedom in their natural habitats. Many of them are rescued from circuses or places where they suffered mistreatment, as well as from public institutions that rescue them and have nowhere to place them, offering them a safe environment. The Safari carries out numerous species conservation projects with associations worldwide.
Opened in August 1975, the Aitana Safari remained open until 1983, when an extreme drought forced its closure and the relocation of the animals. It was six years later that they could return again. Since then, they have housed animals from all continents, from mammals to birds.
