The automotive sector is experiencing a very prosperous period. Not only did car registrations increase last year, 2024, but the sale of motorcycles and light vehicles in Spain also recorded a growth of over 10%, with 247,927 units registered, as noted by the National Association of Two-Wheel Sector Companies (Anesdor).
This is the best figure since 2008, when a total of 309,170 units were registered. According to these figures, 16.8% of all vehicles registered in Spain are a motorcycle or light vehicle – L category of homologation.
Moreover, when added to those of the last decade, the total fleet of motorcycles and light vehicles has accumulated a growth of 16.8%, reaching 5,958,395 vehicles. Furthermore, the motorcycle market achieved the best results in 2024, representing 89.6% of the sector, with an 11.5% growth and a total of 222,105 registrations.
"The data from last year, 2024, were very positive for the sector. However, it must be considered that at the end of the year, we had the factor of regulatory change, which led to exceptional commercial offers and a certain number of self-registrations, which will need to be sold in these first months and will weigh down the data for 2025," details José María Riaño, general secretary of Anesdor.
In fact, referring to the results of December 2024, Riaño adds that "they were extraordinary, to the point of significantly boosting the results of the entire year. On one hand, the DANA motivated exceptional registrations, but above all, the transition to the Euro emissions stage from this January has forced many self-registrations." In detail, "from January, our sector can only register the new Euro 5+ Stage. Neither this stage nor the previous Euro5 are covered in the environmental label regulation, which is why we urge the DGT to solve this problem urgently and provide legal certainty to the 850,000 users affected by this situation," he concludes.
By segments, the scooter, with 117,126 units and a 6% growth, remains the most popular motorcycle, accounting for 47.2% of total sales. Conversely, mopeds recorded a decline of -8.4%, with a total of 13,463 units sold. Negative data due to the regulatory disadvantage it suffers compared to other micromobility vehicles.
Also, electric motorcycles and light vehicles recorded a drop of almost 36% with 9,573 units. The government's electromobility policy does not adequately address these vehicles, which is reflected in the data.
Finally, the private channel is dominant, with a total of 187,059 units, 84.2% of the total.
Looking ahead to this year, the result is expected to be positive again, but in a more moderate way, with a growth of 1% and an approximate total of 250,700 registrations.
From January 1st, only motorcycles and light vehicles that comply with the Euro5+ Stage homologation, with new durability requirements and the new, more demanding sound test, can be registered.
L category vehicles are becoming more sustainable, but this is not reflected in the DGT's environmental labeling. The Royal Decree regulating the labels has not been updated since its entry into force, and during this time, no new Euro stages for cars have been released, but they have for the L category, Anesdor stated during a press conference held yesterday in Madrid.
According to this regulation, vehicles of the Euro5 and Euro5+ stages are in a legal vacuum. Approximately 850,000 vehicles are in this situation. They are at the emission level of the ECO label for cars, but they are receiving the C label without legal coverage to justify it. "It should be noted that as of today, the ECO label for motorcycles is vacant," they emphasize.
And this error in label assignment means that both the regulation of Low Emission Zones in most municipalities and the different incentive policies discriminate against motorcycles and light vehicles. Thus, the Association has urged the DGT to solve this problem urgently, to provide legal certainty to those 850,000 users.
