The motorcycle and light vehicle sector grew by 2% with a total of 17,173 units registered in August. Despite having one less working day compared to 2023, last month once again showed positive figures. Regarding the year-to-date, the sector has grown by 4.3% with a total of 160,476 registrations.
The most important market, motorcycles, closed August with a total of 15,196 registrations, 3.7% more than in 2023. By type of use, road motorcycles saw an increase of +9.3% (5,942 units), followed by scooters with +2.2% (8,851 units), while off-road motorcycles saw a decrease in registrations by -26.2% (399 units).
According to José María Riaño, Secretary General of ANESDOR, "Citizens are aware of the advantages that motorcycles bring to daily mobility, and for this reason, the motorcycle and light vehicle sector continues to grow month after month. September arrives and with it a new school year begins, cities return to their usual traffic volumes where motorcycles are increasingly present. At ANESDOR, we insist that all Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans and Low Emission Zones being implemented in various municipalities must include a specific chapter that addresses the particularities of motorcycles and their users. This will contribute to much more sustainable and safe mobility. Motorcycles are neither cars nor bicycles and require specific considerations in these regulations."
By engine size, the highest growth was seen in high-displacement motorcycles (>750cc) with an increase of +25% (2,481 units), followed by low-displacement motorcycles (up to 125cc) which also grew by +1.6% (8,705 units), while medium-displacement motorcycles (125cc-750cc) decreased by -2% (4,010 units). Regarding distribution channels, the private channel grew by 5.5% (13,838 units), while the rental and corporate channels decreased by -15% (193 units) and -10.7% (1,165 units) respectively. With these figures, motorcycles have accumulated a growth of +6% in 2024 (143,661 units), with the private channel leading this growth with a total of 124,933 registrations (+9.4%).
The moped market recorded a decline of -19.3% (1,151 units). The only channel with positive data was rentals, although with just 6 more units compared to 2023, totaling 64 units. The private channel decreased by -7% (842 units) and the corporate channel decreased by -53% (245 units). Year-to-date, the moped segment has fallen by -17% (8,655 units), with the private channel providing the best figures with 7,011 registrations (+3.5%). The negative data recorded for mopeds can be partly explained by their gradual replacement by light motorcycles of 125cc/11kW and partly due to regulatory disadvantages that mopeds face compared to other micromobility vehicles (scooters, electric bicycles, etc.).
Regarding other L-category vehicle markets: tricycles grew by +12.1% (277 units), and heavy quadricycles also increased by +19% (359 units). Meanwhile, light quadricycles fell by -7.3% (190 units). Year-to-date: heavy quadricycles have grown by +18% (3,336 units), light quadricycles have decreased by -1.1% (2,254 units), and tricycles have fallen by -7.3% (2,570 units).
