There are few neighbourhoods more Alicante-like than San Antón. Among its streets, which were excluded for centuries from the walls surrounding the city, one can breathe the spirit of that town which was once the capital, composed of streets that form a layout of low houses and narrow, intricate streets hanging from the slopes of Mount Benacantil.

Walking through this Alicante neighbourhood is always a pleasure due to its picturesque houses and the urban art paintings that adorn some of its facades. Moreover, among its streets, one can discover one of the most unique houses in the city where many, both locals and tourists, gaze up at its facade.

This is the most patriotic house in Spain. A two-storey home decorated as if it were the red and yellow flag. The owners decided to paint the facade in a vibrant yellow, adorned with a red base and matching awnings. During winter, the facade is decorated with about twenty Poinsettias, completing the ensemble with their red leaves.

Symbols of Alicante

This tribute to the national flag is not the only detail hidden by this house. Besides the red and yellow stripes, as a symbol of Spanish identity, the facade features some deeply rooted Alicante details. A tile piece of the Santa Faz protects the entrance of the house.

And it is not the only symbol surrounding the entrance to the most patriotic house in Spain. Below the reproduction of the relic, there is also a commemorative tile of the 50th anniversary, in 2014, of the Cristo de la Fe, 'El Gitano', one of the most representative processions of the Santa Cruz Brotherhood. This procession is especially cherished by the people of Alicante as the bearers carry the floats from the Santa Cruz hermitage, at the top of the neighbourhood, down to the Rambla through the winding streets of the old Alicante neighbourhood.

Another ceramic piece presides over the door of the house, depicting a bullfighter in action, and if the visitor has any doubt, they can always come closer and read the traditional: 'Viva España'. The decoration also includes some phrases on a tile, which can be bought at the Santa Faz market, reading: "I have decided to do what I like because it is good for my health" and "It's a beautiful day, you'll see how someone comes and ruins it."

A Very Patriotic Province

It is not the only symbol of Spain in a private home that the province of Alicante boasts. As previously reported by TodoAlicante, a swimming pool in Torrevieja represents the Iberian Peninsula, with Portugal as the children's area.

This peculiar swimming area is located in an urbanisation in Torrevieja, between Palangre Street and Finland Street. A very close area to the Playa de los Locos in the town of Vega Baja.

The discovery is credited to a Twitter user who, in early autumn 2022, reminisced about the peculiar pool visible from their former holiday home in Torrevieja. And bingo! The swimming area shaped like the Iberian Peninsula exists and is part of a nearby urbanisation.
