Two of the 50 speed cameras that issued the most fines in Spain during 2023 are located in the city of Alicante, according to a study by the drivers' advocacy organisation European Motorists Association (AEA), which reveals that the traffic control points of the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) issued 3,355,287 speeding fines that year.

In its study, the AEA highlights that only 50 speed cameras, out of more than 1,000 deployed by Traffic across Spanish roads, account for more than 30% of the total fines issued by the DGT each year on roads under its jurisdiction -1,245,053-.

By autonomous communities, the report highlights that the most active control points were located in Andalusia -with 436,273 fines issued-, Madrid -210,792-, and the Valencian Community -127,063-.

Two of the most fined speed cameras in Spain are located on the A-70 as it passes through Alicante, specifically at kilometres 27.3 and 8.6. These speed control points, with a limit of 80 km/h, recorded more than 15,000 and more than 12,500 offences in 2023, respectively. In other words, they catch a driver approximately every 20 minutes.

In addition to these two, the DGT has installed dozens of speed cameras throughout the road network of the province of Alicante in 2025, including motorways, highways, and secondary roads. There are fixed, mobile, and section devices.

On the other hand, the most active speed camera in Spain, according to the AEA, is located in Madrid at km 20.2 of the M-40 ring road, with a record of 118,149 fines.

Speeding fines

The Directorate General of Traffic categorises speeding penalties as minor, which are accompanied by a fine of up to 100 euros without loss of points; serious, punished with 200 euros and in some cases with loss of points; and very serious, which involve fines of 500 euros or more and always result in loss of driving licence points. In the vast majority of cases, speeding is considered a serious offence.

The president of AEA, Mario Arnaldo, believes that "the DGT should reconsider its speed camera policy, as these points are not achieving the goal of preventing speeding or accidents, turning speed cameras into mere revenue-generating instruments."
