On Thursday, December 26th, the Society Venida de la Virgen unveiled the new attire that will update the costumes worn by the drum, the herald, and Cantó during the upcoming Venida de la Virgen festivities in Elche.
"For now, we are presenting these new costumes, but we will gradually renew all of them. This renewal began under the previous Board of Directors, and we have aimed to adapt all the attire to the 14th century," stated Fina Mari Román, President of the Society Venida de la Virgen.
The new attire is designed by haute couture designer Juan Antonio Martínez, who explained that "the heralds' costumes consist of a tabard made from a type of canvas fabric, printed and embroidered with the senyera and the coat of arms of the Elche City Council in the centre. The tights will also feature a detail of the Elche flag."
Additionally, Martínez detailed that "the new Cantó costume features a lower sleeve and a slashed upper sleeve, allowing it to be lined with fur in the future to make it warmer." The new designs consistently maintain the essence of the previous attire with the red cape, which is the coastguard's hallmark. "It also includes blue tones, as it was a very expensive fabric at the time, and a small nod to Saint Agatángelo," the designer assured.
Finally, Mayor Pablo Ruz expressed gratitude for José Antonio Martínez's work: "You have done a spectacular job, always considering historical coherence, as Cantó's costume is that of a police officer of the time." Ruz also added, "We must continue to progress and hope that new costumes will arrive next year."
