On August 16, 2017, the lifeless body of engineer Antonio Navarro Cerdán was discovered in a garage in the Valencian neighborhood of Patraix.
After ruling out several hypotheses, the investigation focused on the victim's close circle. His wife, María Jesús M. C. (Maje), became the main suspect and was accused of the murder following a wiretapped phone conversation with Salvador R. L., a colleague and one of her lovers.
After various trials, both were convicted of the murder of Antonio Navarro Cerdán and are serving sentences in the prisons of Fontcalent (22 years for Maje) and Picassent (17 years for Salva).
This story, which once captured public attention, returns to the screens as a Netflix film, 'The Black Widow', with its first images and key details now revealed.
The film is based on the events surrounding this crime and the subsequent police and court proceedings. It features top-tier actors, including Carmen Machi, who plays Esther Maldonado, the police inspector leading the investigation into the Patraix crime.
Carmen Machi will track Maje and Salva, portrayed by Ivana Baquero and Tristan Ulloa. The cast also includes Álex Gadea as 'Arturo', the fictional name given to Antonio Navarro Cerdán in this new Netflix film.
The first trailer for the Netflix film 'The Black Widow', produced by Bambú Producciones, has been released, showcasing key moments from Maje's life: from her wedding to extramarital encounters, parties, and conversations with Salva.
This preview also offers a glimpse into the police investigation, from the discovery of the murder weapon to the accusation against Maje.
The climax of this brief video is marked by one of the phrases Maje used to incite Salva to commit the crime: "Would you do it for me?" Both appear together in various frames, alongside their phone messages.
This new project, directed by Carlos Sedes, began filming in late 2024 in Valencia. It is in the 'cap i casal' where this race-against-time investigation to catch the young, sweet, and serene widow Maje, married to Antonio for less than a year, is recreated.
The film 'The Black Widow' will premiere on Netflix on May 30.
"Why would someone think it's better to commit murder than to divorce?" was the question that sparked the idea of turning Maje's story and the Patraix crime into a film, acknowledged Ramón Campos, the project's executive producer.
"Over the years, we have tried to unravel the answer and believe we have understood, though not comprehended, why Maje decided to manipulate Salvador to murder someone who was undoubtedly a good person. Because this film is not about the victim. It's about the murderers. Sometimes the answer to our actions lies not in who we are, but in where we come from."
