If the clouds permit, a total lunar eclipse will inaugurate a long season of unique events for astronomy lovers this Thursday night. The lunar eclipse will be visible from much of the world, and in Spain, it can be observed as total in the centre and west of the peninsula, the Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla.

In the eastern peninsula and the Balearic Islands, the Moon will set before the total eclipse begins, so only the start of the partial phase will be visible. Meanwhile, in the rest of the peninsula, Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla, the lunar setting will occur before the total eclipse ends (the start of the total phase will be seen, but not the end), according to the National Astronomical Institute.

Specifically, these are the key timings of the eclipse: the partial eclipse begins at 6:09 am; the total eclipse starts at 7:26 am; and the total eclipse ends at 8:31 am. Coinciding with sunrise, the best time to view the eclipse is between 6:09 and 8 in the morning.

The eclipse can be observed with the naked eye and poses no danger nor requires any special equipment. Additionally, this eclipse has a peculiarity that makes it more attractive: the Moon will not be completely dark but will take on a reddish hue due to some sunlight being deflected by the Earth's atmosphere.

The eclipse will be visible in some of its phases in Europe, much of Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, and the east of Asia and Oceania. The totality phase of the eclipse will be appreciated in western Europe, western Africa, North America, South America, and Antarctica.
