There is unrest in Monforte del Cid following the approval of four large-scale solar projects within its municipal boundaries. The council of this Alicante town reiterates its opposition to these initiatives (Mediterráneo I-IV) after the Generalitat has given the green light to their implementation.
Municipal sources claim that this approval has been carried out despite multiple objections submitted by both the council itself and numerous local residents and groups, in defence of the municipality's territorial, agricultural, and landscape model.
The projects, promoted by subsidiaries of Desarrollos Fotovoltaicos Ibéricos SLU, envisage the installation of more than 77 hectares of solar panels between the municipal areas of Agost and Monforte del Cid. The planned evacuation infrastructures would directly affect agricultural areas in production, the rural landscape, and the natural environment of the municipality, according to municipal sources.
The Town Hall has submitted formal objections at various stages of the administrative process, highlighting the negative environmental, visual, territorial, and socio-economic impacts that these large-scale plants would entail.
"We are not against renewable energies, but we do not agree with this model of massive implementation, without local consensus, ignoring what the residents want and without an orderly plan," declared the mayor. "These decisions cannot be made from the offices in Valencia without listening to the territory. We have been clearly and articulately expressing our opposition for a long time. Renewable energies yes, but not like this."
