No group at the Holy Face pilgrimage failed to mention the blackout that left almost all of Spain without electricity on Monday. This parrot knows it well, as it flew over the pilgrimage with excitement, witnessing the multitude of Alicante residents heading towards the hamlet.
Who knows if the Minister of Science, Diana Morant, and the Mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, were also discussing during the journey where they were caught by the historic moment, and if they were among the Spaniards who unsuccessfully tried to contact their families before losing network coverage.
Current affairs are a regular feature of the Santa Faz walk. The political landing is joined by two hours of walking, which provide ample time to catch up and debate with the person next to you, whether they want to talk about Trump or not.
Moreover, the Holy Face continues to work miracles, managing to transcend borders and conflicts to unite Russia and Ukraine. Not even the war between their home countries could stop the friendship of Svetlana and Irina, of Russian and Ukrainian origin respectively.
In the seven years they have been in Alicante, they have not missed a single pilgrimage. They say that among their favorite moments is the 'paraeta'. "It's phenomenal, it cheers up the journey and gives us the strength to reach the Holy Face," Svetlana acknowledges while balancing her hands between anise rolls, mistela, and cane.
Fortunately, these pilgrims shared some of their lunch with this parrot, which, although it arrives flying, also needs to replenish its strength.
