A minor has undergone emergency surgery at the General Hospital of Alicante after suffering a brain hemorrhage caused by participating in the 'mataleón' viral challenge. The young person fell unconscious after being strangled, sustaining a severe blow to the head.

The incident occurred last Friday afternoon at the San Juan Beach in Alicante. It was halfway through the promenade where a group was practicing this martial arts technique, which leaves the opponent 'KO'.

The 'mataleón' involves strangling a person from behind. The attacker wraps their arm around the victim's neck and squeezes until the carotid arteries are compressed, cutting off blood flow to the brain and causing unconsciousness.

This method has been widely used for robbery, although initial investigations suggest that the youths were engaging in this viral challenge spread through social media. It is a dangerous practice, as experts warn it can cause brain injuries.

In the case of this injured minor, seeing that he did not respond after falling to the ground, the emergency services were alerted for his transfer to the hospital. After an initial assessment at the Sant Joan d'Alacant clinical center, specialists transferred the young person to the General Hospital of Alicante, where he underwent emergency surgery.

According to TodoAlicante, the minor's condition worsened after the strangulation and subsequent fall, to the point where the hemorrhage began compressing part of the brain. Consequently, medical teams were forced to intubate the young person to keep him alive.

The transfer to Doctor Balmis General Hospital in Alicante was due to the severity of the situation, with the minor entering in a "critical condition". Pediatric experts express surprise at the rise of such cases, involving minors as victims of the 'mataleón' assault. "They are not aware of the danger," sources from this newspaper point out.

This challenge has spread across Spain, both in criminal violence and as a recreational activity. "They see it as a game," experts warn, emphasizing that "they watch the videos and try it out because many find it 'amusing' to test it."
