A Minor Attacks Former Teacher with a Screwdriver in Talavera de la Reina

A teacher from the "Puerta de Cuartos" Secondary Education Institute in Talavera de la Reina (Toledo) was injured on Monday after being attacked with a screwdriver by a former student of the school. The assailant, a 13-year-old, has been diagnosed with a mental illness, as confirmed by the Non-University Teaching Staff Board of Toledo, which has condemned the incident.

The incident occurred within the school premises when the minor, who is no longer a student at the institution, entered the school grounds. The assaulted teacher, who required medical attention following the incident, is now out of danger. According to María Josefa Casas, president of the Non-University Teaching Staff Board of Toledo, "there have been moments of great tension among teachers and students, and we want to express our solidarity and support to the affected colleague as well as to the rest of the professionals and students at the school."

"The safety of teachers and the entire educational community must be a priority for the competent authorities, and we are concerned about the lack of preventive measures that could prevent such situations, especially when they involve vulnerable minors," added María Josefa Casas, who called for "reinforcing the necessary resources in educational centers regarding support for child and adolescent mental health and security protocols to ensure that schools are safe places." The educational union ANPE has also expressed solidarity with the assaulted teacher, who was the director of this same institute years ago. This union has offered the teacher its specific service for supporting teachers who are victims of aggression or harassment, which includes accompaniment and advice for the victim.
