The Torrellano Variant project has become a priority for the Government of Spain. The initiative to remove the railway lines from the southern coast of Alicante and route the railway inland to Alicante-Elche airport has already moved from the Ministry of Transport, led by Óscar Puente, to the Ministry of Ecological Transition for phase two. Currently, technicians from the department headed by Sara Aagesen are working on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIA) of the project with the intention of "completing it urgently," according to sources familiar with the process who spoke to TodoAlicante.

The Torrellano Variant is one of the biggest challenges facing Pedro Sánchez's government in Alicante. It is also one of the major demands of residents, not only in the southern area but throughout the city. The railway lines in San Gabriel not only create a physical barrier between this area and the coast, hindering the project of a continuous 14-kilometre coastal promenade from Urbanova to San Juan Beach, but also pose a danger that has already claimed the lives of around twenty people this century. The latest incident occurred just two weeks ago when a young woman was struck by a commuter train.

The Torrellano Variant is a project that has been pending for more than twenty years. However, until now, Adif has always been in favour of maintaining the coastal railway line while executing the inland route. Residents have always been sceptical about the removal of the tracks. It was the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, who finally ruled out the electrification of the tracks and opted to execute the Torrellano Variant with railway traffic inland.

Alejandro Soler, the general secretary of the PSOE in the province of Alicante, met last week with neighbourhood associations in the southern area to hear their demands. They have requested that the land of the Parque del Mar be released so that footbridges can be built, even if only temporarily, to provide access to the green area over the railway tracks.

Soler pledged to "speed up the EIA project" and the provisional steps to the coast. In the case of the Environmental Impact Statement, the process can take up to three years. The aim is to have it completed this year, along with the construction project for the two phases into which the Torrellano Variant has been divided: the first is designed to provide service to Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport, with a station there. This section is in the project drafting phase. Phase II, in turn, will continue from Phase I to reach the Alacant-Terminal station.
