Merino Considers It 'Unheard Of' for the Government to Limit Generalitat's Debt to Address Reconstruction After Denying Non-Refundable Resources

Ruth Merino, the Minister of Economy and Finance, urged Vice President and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, on Thursday to exclude political calculations from all matters related to aid for those affected by the dana. This request was made during an unscheduled meeting at Fitur, according to sources from the Generalitat.

Merino demanded that the minister refrain from "hindering" the social and economic reconstruction of the Valencian Community. She noted that "mixing" such important and disparate measures in a single royal decree law, referring to the 'omnibus', is not only irresponsible but can only be described as political maneuvering.

According to Merino, "after conditioning extraordinary funds for the Valencian Community on the approval of new General State Budgets, something that is not technically necessary, it would be unheard of for the Government to now attempt to limit the Generalitat's borrowing capabilities, the only alternative given after denying non-refundable resources."

"Now that the Government knows it will not be able to approve a General State Budget due to Junts' rejection, each day that passes without updating the financing system's advance payments to what the Government itself communicated to the autonomous communities in July for 2025, it is turning Valencians into hostages of its extreme parliamentary weakness," the minister concluded.
