Mercadona plans to purchase over 1,550 tonnes of figs and brevas in 2025 from Alicante suppliers, a 45% increase compared to last year when it acquired 1,068 tonnes. The company is committed to offering local products and collaborates with suppliers Cambayas, from Elche, and Fruitum, from Albatera.
The Alicante breva season runs from May to June, while the fig season extends from July to August. During this period, customers across Spain and Portugal will be able to purchase figs and brevas from the region. However, from September, figs will also be sourced from other Spanish regions such as Lleida.
Although both fruits come from the fig tree, they have different maturation cycles. Figs are more intensely coloured and sweeter, whereas brevas are larger with thicker skin.
Committed to Nationally Sourced Products
The company emphasizes its commitment to national products. Mercadona's purchases from local producers reached 29 billion euros. Additionally, it supports various initiatives by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) related to local products.
Furthermore, Mercadona "advocates for fair trading practices and has been a signatory to the Code of Good Commercial Practices in Food Contracting for years." This voluntary agreement, which represents a step forward in promoting fair commercial practices, is part of the Law on Measures to Improve the Functioning of the Food Chain and is driven by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) in collaboration with various associations across the national agri-food chain.
