Melania Trump returns, bringing European fashion back to the White House. For the Slovenian ex-model, America is not first, contrary to her husband's slogan. During her initial tenure as First Lady of the United States, following Donald Trump's 2016 election victory, she did not receive a warm welcome from the country's fashion industry. Several designers refused to dress her in protest against the magnate's political ideology. She responded subtly by placing her trust in the most prestigious luxury brands from across the Atlantic, becoming a style icon.

Melania Trump left the White House as she arrived: with impeccable style reminiscent of Jackie Kennedy. To become First Lady, she chose a two-piece ensemble with a high-neck bolero crossed at the chest, crafted in sky-blue cashmere by Ralph Lauren, one of the few Americans in her wardrobe. It was the veteran American designer who dared to dress a woman who, through no fault of her own, was affected by her husband's image.

To complement Ralph Lauren's exquisite look, the then First Lady opted for long gloves and matching high heels. Four years later, in her farewell from the White House, dressed in strict black, she played with the same formula: striking Louboutin heels, long black gloves like her impeccable two-piece Chanel - Jackie Kennedy's favourite brand - and Bottega Veneta sunglasses. And, as the finishing touch, a marvellous and coveted Hermès Birkin bag.

These are just two of the looks with which she brought back the glamour of bygone times to Washington. From the era of Jackie Kennedy, the best-dressed First Lady in history, with the stylish Melania's permission, who combines a fabulous figure with a style that has been refined over time and her new role, in which she seems increasingly comfortable.

Indeed, Melania Trump, with her forced smiles, unfriendly demeanour, and intimidating glances, quickly surpassed her husband in popularity, garnering some sympathy in certain circles. When they appear together, the Slovenian often steals the spotlight from her controversial spouse. For this reason, in her last two appearances, she has tried to be as discreet as possible. Whether when she went to vote, wearing a black polka-dot shirt dress by Dior that she had worn before, or when she stood by her husband on stage after he was declared the winner of the last election, in a sober and elegant grey suit by the same French brand.

She wore Dior for her wedding to the magnate in 2005. It was then the only occasion Melania graced the cover of the American edition of Vogue, where she was dubbed "Trump's new bride".

Beyond the cheeky headline, the fact is that all First Ladies of the United States have appeared on the cover of the magazine run by the powerful Anna Wintour, except Melania. It is said she was offered an interview and a photo session, but was not guaranteed the cover, leading the Slovenian to decline the offer.

An open war between Melania and the fashion sector enters a new chapter.
