The Mediterranean Foundation continues its commitment to literature. The cultural entity, based in Alicante, has announced the 63rd edition of the 'Gabriel Miró' prize, one of Spain's most prestigious and long-standing short story competitions, with prize money totalling 4,000 euros: three thousand for the winner and one thousand for the runner-up.
The registration period will remain open until March 31, and from September, the jury, consisting of Cristina Llorens, José Ferrándiz Lozano, Mariano Sánchez Soler, Francisco Javier Díez de Revenga, and Antonio Redero, will announce the verdict.
Since its inception, the 'Gabriel Miró' short story competition has been awarded to both emerging writers and prominent names in Spanish literature, including Francisco Umbral (1964) and Félix Grande (1966). Its more than six decades of celebration make it "a benchmark in the Spanish literary scene," highlights the president of the Mediterranean Foundation, Luis Boyer.
This prize, in addition to reflecting the firm commitment of the Mediterranean Foundation to literature and the dissemination of Gabriel Miró's legacy, one of the most universal Spanish writers of the Generation of '14, serves as a "springboard for emerging writers," as well as "recognition" for established authors.
The longevity and prestige of the 'Gabriel Miró' short story prize demonstrate its importance in the literary field, "and we are proud to continue promoting creativity and talent through this competition," acknowledges Boyer; who emphasizes that the short story "should not be considered lesser for its brevity," as previous editions have showcased "true gems of literature."
The texts will be on a free theme and will enter the competition under a pseudonym through the Mundo Arti registration platform. The commitment to using new technologies in the various initiatives of the Mediterranean Foundation directly impacts the user and, in the specific case of literary competitions, benefits the contest by modernizing it and opening it to a process of expansion and internationalization.
Creators of any nationality who have not been awarded the first prize in previous editions may enter this competition. The works, written in Spanish, must have a maximum length of eight pages and must not have been awarded in another literary competition.
The 'Gabriel Miró' prize, with its 63 editions of history, is one of the oldest literary contests in Spain, and it joins the Mediterranean Foundation Novel Awards and the New Narrators Prize. With these awards, the entity encourages culture and literary creation in the Spanish language.
