Motorcycle airbags have become a crucial element for rider protection due to the increasing demand for road safety. Accidents resulting in serious injuries are more common than one might think. According to a study by RACE and ADAC, this technology could reduce the impact force on the chest by 25% and on the back by 75%. In fact, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), which already recommends their use, is considering making them mandatory in the coming years.
Generally, motorcycle airbags come in the form of a vest containing an airbag and compressed air canisters. This system activates seconds before an impact or fall, providing comprehensive protection to key areas such as the torso, back, shoulders, abdomen, and neck. The airbag inflates in fractions of a second and deflates quickly, allowing the rider to continue their journey without inconvenience. Moreover, its operation is intuitive, requiring no manual intervention, ensuring easy and efficient use in emergency situations.
Although motorcycle airbags have gained popularity for their ability to protect riders, questions still arise regarding the types, functionality, and maintenance. This accessory is available in two main variants, each offering advantages in terms of price, functionality, and technology.
Mechanical Airbag. It is attached to the motorcycle's chassis or subframe with a cable, which activates when the rider falls and the cable is pulled. Its technology is simple and affordable, with recharge prices starting at 25 euros. An example of this type of airbag is the SPIDI Air DPS Yellow Fluo.
Electronic Airbag. It uses advanced sensors such as gyroscopes and accelerometers to detect falls before impact, automatically activating to provide immediate protection. Recharge costs range from 160 to 300 euros, with models like the Dainese Smart Jacket and the Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 being notable examples of this more sophisticated technology.
To properly maintain a motorcycle airbag, it is essential to conduct regular inspections and ensure that the compressed air canisters are in good condition. Additionally, it is advisable to send the device to the official technical service for a check-up to ensure there are no internal damages.
You can also continue riding after the airbag deflates. However, you should be aware that the compressed air canisters will be empty after activation. It is necessary to replace them as soon as possible to ensure the device's functionality in the event of another fall.
It also does not activate if you are walking. The system is designed to function only when you are riding the motorcycle. This is because the sensors, such as gyroscopes and accelerometers, only detect specific movements associated with motorcycle use.
