Kylian Mbappé was highly involved in the match between France and hosts Germany for the third place in the Nations League. The French side showed more firepower in a balanced game, but the individual brilliance of their stars was enough to settle a match that was almost a formality. The French team at least demonstrated that they are not just any team, which further reinforces the triumph of the Spanish national team last Thursday.
In the match that no one wants to play, Mbappé was the standout player. Despite being imprecise in several actions, his persistence was rewarded with a goal just before halftime. Germany increased their pace in the second half, but in a defensive lapse, Mbappé once again found himself one-on-one with Ter Stegen and generously set up Olise for a goal.
The German side suffered the annulment of a penalty and a goal, and despite the refereeing decisions, the image they presented throughout the tournament was very weak for what Germany is accustomed to, with even worse results including two home defeats. Now, the Mannschaft focuses on securing qualification for next year's World Cup. France will aim for the same goal, although their performances convey greater confidence in achieving it.
As for Mbappé, who seems unaffected by the physical toll of the season, he will compete with Real Madrid in the Club World Cup starting next week, the last trophy that can embellish the white team's season. The two goals and assists he has achieved in these international fixtures give confidence to a player who, against Germany, played more on the left wing, a position where he traditionally feels more comfortable and has been rarely seen this season.
