After months of negotiations regarding the training of Medicine and Nursing students, the President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has finally signed the regulatory agreements between the Department of Health and the public universities.
This marks the end of a conflict that had pitted the University of Alicante (UA) against the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) over the Health Sciences degrees at both institutions. With this agreement, students are assured of completing their training in the province's hospitals.
From the next academic year, students pursuing undergraduate and master's degrees in Health Sciences will be able to undertake their practical training in health centres under the Department of Health. The new agreements will remain in effect until the 2028/2029 academic year.
The training is guaranteed for four years for Health Sciences students, including Medicine and Nursing, as well as other degrees such as Speech Therapy. With this agreement, all public hospitals in the province will become university hospitals and will host students for training.
Additionally, the agreement outlines a distribution of health centres between the University of Alicante and the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, with each having preferred and complementary hospitals for Medicine and Nursing degrees. This agreement fully secures placements for students from both universities.
For the new Medicine degree at UA, the 2025/2026 academic year will be the first in which students will undertake training in health centres.
Reactions from Mazón and the Rectors
Mazón expressed gratitude for the willingness of both universities to reach an agreement. The President highlighted that this agreement ensures "students receive the best academic and clinical training." He explained that the signing initiates a pioneering model that ends the exclusivity of universities with hospitals. "The true beneficiaries are not the universities, healthcare staff, or students, but the patients, who ultimately include all of us," he concluded.
From the University of Alicante, Rector Amparo Navarro expressed satisfaction with the agreement. "A very good agreement for the universities, making Alicante a pioneer in health studies," she stated.
The Rector of Miguel Hernández University, Juan José Ruiz, emphasized that "the rights of students have been maintained." "We can only thank all those involved," he concluded.
