Mary became a princess with what experts deemed the most dreadful wedding dress in European royalty. It was rumored that her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, was behind this spectacle. From that point, everything that followed could only improve. Two decades later, and having just celebrated her first anniversary as the Queen Consort of Denmark, Mary, the Australian lawyer who captured the heart of the 'turbo prince' at the Sydney Games—so nicknamed for King Frederick's love of speed—has also won over fashion critics. Year after year, she tops the lists of best-dressed royals, all while being frugal.
As with every new year, the fashion and royalty-focused website UFO No More has released its list detailing the expenditure or investment, depending on one's perspective, of royal women over the past 12 months. For nearly a decade, Charlene of Monaco has topped this list, having spent over 350,000 euros in 2024 to look radiant at official events as the Principality's first lady.
Queen Mary ranks tenth, with expenses amounting to 69,108 euros. It is estimated that she debuted 126 dresses during a particularly special year, the first of Frederick X's reign. The new monarchs have excelled over the past twelve months. There were doubts about how the Danish people would receive their new king, especially since the transition occurred just two months after the scandalous photos of Frederick of Denmark with Genoveva Casanova, with whom he spent the night at his home following a walk and dinner in Madrid.
Frederick and Mary, especially Mary, have moved past this and focused on what truly matters: the kingdom. Replacing Margrethe has not been easy, but they have managed to attract the youth with a monarchy that is more transparent and addresses issues such as climate change—King Frederick's cause—and gender equality—Mary's cause—that were sidelined during Queen Margrethe's reign.
The shadow of the previous monarch is long, but she has gracefully ceded the spotlight to her son and daughter-in-law, whom she had previously restricted from accessing the royal jewellery collection during her nearly twenty years as a princess. So much so that the Australian, who reportedly speaks near-perfect Danish thanks to Queen Margrethe's insistence, attended an auction to acquire a tiara to alternate with the two she already possessed.
Since her husband's proclamation as Frederick X, Queen Mary has polished the jewels that Queen Margrethe once wore, described as the queenliest of queens for her extravagant attire. Moreover, just a couple of months ago, the Royal House shared a video on social media showing Queen Mary crafting a new tiara, which she soon debuted.
While she has consistently 'debuted' the crown jewels at every opportunity, she has also made reuse her hallmark. This year, she has combined new outfits with many she wore during her time as a princess, particularly for gala dinners, which continues to surprise. All the while, she never steps out of her towering high heels, which lend her a sophisticated air, nor does she part with the gentle smile that has endeared her to a nation that is now truly hers.
