La Marjal Park's entrance, located on Avenida de Las Naciones in Alicante, hosted the opening of the photo exhibition 'Wetlands of the World: From Alicante to the Antipodes' this Monday. This is one of the many events taking place this year to mark the tenth anniversary of the park's construction. Until next September, La Marjal transforms into the city's largest and most sustainable exhibition space, with large photographs displayed around the park's perimeter, offering over 150 meters of open exhibition for all citizens to explore.
Over the past decade, La Marjal has become an international benchmark for nature-based solutions to the area's flooding issues. This artificial wetland has placed Alicante on the map of sustainable urban innovation. Amelia Navarro, Director of Sustainability at Aguas de Alicante, highlighted this during the inauguration ceremony. Navarro stated, "In this photographic exhibition on wetlands in Spain and around the world, we emphasize the importance of La Marjal Park as an international reference for urban wetlands. Its design and sustainable management at the municipal level and by Aguas de Alicante over these 10 years, with a joint sensitivity to manage this special infrastructure in harmony with nature and with the citizens in mind, has made the park an example for other cities."
Starting from the idea that wetlands are vital ecosystems for biodiversity, generally located near the sea with a great diversity of fauna and flora, essential for regulating the water cycle, filtering pollutants, and providing habitats for local and migratory species, 'Wetlands of the World: From Alicante to the Antipodes' explores notable wetlands, both natural and artificial, from La Marjal and others in the Valencian Community, through national and international sites, reaching those located in our antipodes, Australia. Additionally, this exhibition brings Alicante's citizens closer to La Marjal Park itself, highlighting in its explanatory panels the hydraulic, social, and environmental functions of the facility over its ten-year journey.
One Year of Commemoration
La Marjal Park celebrates its tenth anniversary throughout 2025 with various events, ranging from a presentation of its new brand identity at the beginning of the year to a Scientific-Technical Table at the Provincial College of Architects of Alicante in March under the broad theme of "Nature-Based Solutions," or the event planned for October, where the park itself will host a recreational day open to all Alicante citizens, featuring various leisure proposals to enjoy the environment in its entirety. Alongside this, and throughout the year, La Marjal will continue its usual activities, offering guided tours (by prior reservation on the Aguas de Alicante website), hosting bird ringing days (announced in advance through Aguas de Alicante's social media and the park's digital screens), and being part of the Alicante Urban Trails Network designed by the Department of Environment.
