Just like cars, motorcycles are not exempt from experiencing various mechanical issues due to the high temperatures typical of summer. Therefore, identifying the three parts of a motorcycle that are most likely to get damaged during this period, potentially causing breakdowns that can cost up to 6,000 euros and significantly impact your vacation budget, is essential.
On one hand, there is a risk for motorcycles from dust and other suspended particles, such as salt and sand grains from a beach, according to Euromaster. All these impurities can clog the engine air filter. In some cases, this filter becomes so obstructed that it can affect the engine's performance, necessitating its replacement. The cost of replacing this filter can range between 1,000 and 6,000 euros.
The second motorcycle component that can present significant issues in summer is the chain transmission, which is most common in high-displacement motorcycles. The chain and sprockets wear out with use but will wear out prematurely if not properly lubricated. It is recommended to lubricate every 300-500 km, keep it clean at all times, especially after riding in the rain. If dirt, sand, or soil accumulates on its surface, it can form a paste that can damage the entire transmission kit. Replacing this system incurs an economic cost ranging from 100 to 400 euros.
Thirdly, another component that can present problems with high summer temperatures is the tire. Under these climatic conditions, if we do not check tire pressures, they tend to run with excessive pressure, deforming their surface as there is less rubber in contact with the asphalt. Additionally, adherence is also reduced, which poses an evident risk of accidents.
Lastly, motorcyclists are reminded that the summer period is one of the times of year when more kilometers are covered in less time. It should be noted that a motorcycle tire usually has a lifespan of between 3,000 and 10,000 km depending on the brand and model; therefore, checking their condition is crucial. If they are excessively deformed due to accumulated kilometers, their replacement involves an average cost of between 100 and 140 euros per wheel.
