At six o'clock in the evening, violence erupted brutally in Elche's Primero de Mayo square. A 32-year-old Moroccan citizen was severely injured after being attacked with a machete in public. The assailant vanished without a trace while the victim lay fighting for his life on the pavement.

A unit from the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU), nearby for another incident, rushed to the scene where the victim was bleeding out. "Had they arrived just a few minutes later, he would have died in the square," said a source familiar with the operation. Paramedics managed to revive him before urgently transporting him, escorted by National Police patrols, to Elche General Hospital.

The initial medical report was grim: the young man had a deep incised wound in the abdominal area and other cuts from a bladed weapon—presumably a machete—on his shoulder and neck. According to TodoAlicante, the victim required multiple blood transfusions after being admitted to the hospital before dying in surgery.

The National Police have launched an investigation to identify the attacker and clarify the circumstances surrounding the assault. So far, no arrests have been made, nor has it been revealed if there was any prior relationship between the victim and the assailant.

Second knife murder in the province in June

On June 12, a brawl between Bulgarian clans resulted in the death of a 42-year-old woman in Villena. The Civil Guard arrested four people, an 18-year-old woman and three men aged 43, 40, and 23—the latter charged with the murder.

The brawl that ended in tragedy occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Lepanto Street and left, in addition to the deceased, two men injured by a bladed weapon who were taken to Elda General Hospital.

Apparently, the altercation began in the afternoon when Villena's Local Police received a warning about several Eastern European individuals fighting in a bar in the town center, throwing all sorts of objects. The scuffle, which ended with the intervention of the municipal force, might have reignited at night, leading to the fatal outcome.
