The shadow of what could have been that thwarted assault in Callosa d'en Sarrià, on March 5, still looms over the case. The question of what might have happened lingers in the air like a dense fog that no one has managed to clear. The aborted action left more questions than answers: how far were they willing to go? The course of events halted before the conclusion, but the possibility of a much darker ending remains latent, as if the crime had been contained right at the edge of the inevitable.

The two criminals, caught 'in flagrante' by the Civil Guard, were equipped with a large tarpaulin, cable ties, rolls of duct tape, ropes, large-capacity garbage bags, a saw, masks, gloves, cleaning products, and personal protective equipment (PPE), according to the investigation.

Initially, the officers arrested the two material perpetrators of the robbery, a 64-year-old Briton and a 56-year-old Portuguese, who had entered the house armed and with the necessary materials to rob, immobilise, and possibly murder the victim, as the Armed Institute's officers seized materials commonly used to conceal corpses from the assailants.

Almost a month after the thwarted assault, the Civil Guard has closed 'Operation Covertonio' after arresting the alleged mastermind of the assault, a British woman, former partner of the target and partner of one of the assailants. The arrested, a 54-year-old, allegedly participated in the planning and execution of the crime, coordinating it from abroad and providing key information for its consummation, according to the investigations.

The operation began on March 5, following the arrest in flagrante delicto of the two assailants thanks to a citizen's warning who, through the emergency phone 112, alerted what was happening. The Civil Guard and the Local Police of Callosa d'en Sarrià, in a joint operation, managed to subdue the two suspects, preventing them from carrying out the violent assault they had planned. The arrested were then brought before the Court handling the case, which ordered their provisional imprisonment without bail.

After this first phase, the Judicial Police Team of the Civil Guard of Villajoyosa took over the investigation of the case, managing to identify a third person whose participation was key for the events to take place. The analysis of the seized evidence revealed that the detainee, from the United Kingdom, provided confidential information about the victim, coordinating the action with the perpetrators during its execution.

Furthermore, it was confirmed that during the commission of the assault, the alleged mastermind maintained direct contact with the material perpetrators of the assault, in an operation that combined economic motivations with a complex sentimental relationship among the three protagonists.

Finally, after studying the movements of the woman, who resides in the United Kingdom, the agents became aware of her travel to Spain, where she was located and arrested on April 3 by the investigators. The alleged intellectual author of the assault has been brought before the Investigating Court No. 3 of Villajoyosa, which has ordered her provisional imprisonment without bail.

More than an assault

The investigation has uncovered meticulous planning, which included acquiring materials allegedly intended to immobilise and conceal the victim. Among the seized items are personal protective equipment (PPE), a large tarpaulin, cable ties, rolls of duct tape, ropes, large-capacity garbage bags, a saw, masks, gloves, and cleaning products, all acquired before the trip to Spain, allegedly for use in committing the crime.

These elements, combined with the gathered evidence, have led investigators to hypothesise that the perpetrators' aim went beyond robbery, considering the possibility of a prior agreement to cause greater harm to the victim.

The investigation was carried out by the Judicial Police Team of the Civil Guard of Villajoyosa, thanks to the successful operation initially conducted by the Civil Guard and the Local Police of Callosa d'en Sarrià, whose intervention was decisive in preventing the crime, possibly a murder, from being consummated and in apprehending the two assailants.
