The swift and effective intervention of an officer from the Canine Unit and Animal Protection of the Alicante Local Police successfully saved a puppy's life. The animal, seeking refuge atop an air conditioning compressor, was injured following a fight with another dog.
This rescue occurred last Friday, 21st March, after a neighbour reported witnessing two dogs engaged in a fight in the backyard of a private property. Upon learning of the incident, the Alicante Local Police officer proceeded to the area, located in the southern part of the city.
Upon arriving at the property, the municipal officer observed various traces of blood in the area of the fight. Additionally, he confirmed that one of the dogs, a pitbull, was at the location described in the report. He took several photos and sent them to a colleague while locating the puppy.
The animal, an American Bull Terrier, was injured and frightened, as the officer noted. Furthermore, the dog was in a risky situation, as it sought refuge on the outdoor air conditioning compressor—installed on the facade of this private property where the pitbull remained—located four metres above the street.
According to the officer from the Canine Unit and Animal Protection of the Alicante Local Police, the puppy was also at risk of falling onto the public road. Thus, he called the animal protection society to seek assistance and special equipment for a safe rescue.
Nevertheless, the dog began to grow restless—sensing the officer's presence. To prevent the animal from falling onto the public road, with the risk of impacting the ground, the officer quickly grabbed two leashes from the municipal service dogs and linked them together.
In this way, the officer managed to create a system to secure the animal. After verifying the effectiveness of the loop, the Local Police officer climbed onto the nearby balustrade to get as close as possible to the injured animal.
The officer experienced a risky rescue process, as both could have fallen from such a height with a wrong move. However, the bravery and skill of the Local Police allowed him to get as close as possible to the animal and pass this improvised capture system around the dog's body for a successful rescue.
After saving the puppy's life, the animal protection society—responsible for providing initial veterinary care—transported it to their facilities for an inspection. Due to the severity of the injuries, the American Bull Terrier was referred to a veterinary hospital.
During the rescue operation of this dog, it was confirmed that both animals had the mandatory identification chip, and their owners were contacted. It was verified that they complied with the necessary permits, licenses, and documentation to own these animals. Additionally, they were informed of the situation and the puppy's transfer to the veterinary clinic.
