Life returns to the vicinity of the cafeteria of the Higher Polytechnic School at the University of Alicante. The campus has reclaimed this iconic social club, which also offers canteen and restaurant services, after months of closure due to refurbishment works.
The refurbishment of the canteen was completed during the Christmas holidays, and with the new company now managing the venue, the Polytechnic once again offers coffee and meals to university students, with the return of its former subrogated workers.
Thus, the University of Alicante begins the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year with the shutters up in this cafeteria, which boasts fully renovated spaces after years of deterioration, as explained to TodoAlicante by the Vice-Rector for Infrastructure, Salvador Ivorra.
The renovation and rehabilitation works of the EPS canteen in Alicante included a complete repainting of its walls and the total renovation of its kitchens. The floors and tiles were also replaced, new kitchen furniture was added, the extraction systems were cleaned, and LED lighting was improved.
This reopening is one of the most anticipated on the University of Alicante campus. The Vice-Rector for Infrastructure explained to this newspaper that the date was postponed until December 7 due to "the construction work and a labour issue." The previous company managing the space had incurred a debt with Social Security.
This issue, along with several others that also affected the cafeteria at the Shopping Centre -formerly Don Jamón and operational since last semester as Terreta-, forced the University of Alicante to terminate the contract with the previous contractor.
Once the previous contract was terminated and the renovations completed, as well as the management awarded to a new company, the workers of these cafeterias -subcontracted by the contractor- return to the University of Alicante with "great enthusiasm and eagerness to start working," notes Ivorra, who appreciates that the current contractor has chosen to retain the human staff.
All of them return to turn on the coffee machines and greet their campus colleagues, with whom they have shared years. "We missed them and we are eager to have the first coffee," in addition to seeing students, professors, and technical staff occupy their tables, both indoors and on the terrace, to take a break or work between classes.
