Von der Leyen Requests Trump Until July 9 to Reach 'a Good Deal'

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced this Sunday that she had a 'good' conversation with the US President, Donald Trump, where they discussed the ongoing trade negotiations.

'A good call with the President of the United States,' Von der Leyen posted on her social media account X. The European leader emphasized that 'the EU and the United States have the most significant and close trade relationship in the world.'

'Europe is ready to move forward quickly and firmly in the talks. We will need until July 9 to reach a good agreement,' she added, referring to the deadline set by Washington to achieve a trade deal.

Trump warned last Friday that trade negotiations with the EU 'are going nowhere,' threatening to impose a 50 percent tariff on European products.

On April 2, known as 'Liberation Day,' the US President announced a 20% tariff on all products from the European Union. However, days later, Trump decided to suspend the implementation of the levy for 90 days, maintaining a universal tariff of 10 percent. Additionally, the US set a 25 percent tariff on car and auto parts imports from the EU.

Despite this truce, the European Commission announced in May its intention to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the US tariffs on all foreign imports, including those from the European Union.

Moreover, Brussels made public its proposal for a second round of retaliations, aiming to tax US products worth nearly 100 billion euros, though it stressed that the 'priority' remains a negotiated agreement with the Trump Administration.
