The LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive have embarked on the biggest LEGO Technic challenge to date, recreating a one-of-a-kind, fully drivable McLaren P1 made entirely from LEGO Technic elements. To add to the excitement, McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris has been recruited for the ultimate test: completing a lap around the iconic British circuit of Silverstone in the full-scale LEGO Technic McLaren P1.
This life-size replica of the McLaren P1 is constructed with 342,817 LEGO Technic elements and weighs approximately 1,220 kg, showcasing some truly remarkable engineering feats. The car features fully functional steering, making it the first major LEGO build capable of turning and navigating complex corners on a racing circuit. The construction includes an electric motor powered by LEGO Technic Function batteries and an electric car battery, allowing it to go further than any previous LEGO model.
The immense construction process was brought to life by 23 design, engineering, and building specialists from the LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive, taking 8,344 hours of development and assembly and requiring 393 different types of LEGO Technic elements. Its price reaches €449.99.
With the car assembled, only the ultimate challenge remained: who better to take the wheel than McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris? The British driver rose to the occasion, tackling the twists and turns of the 5.89 km (3.66 miles) Silverstone track and completing a lap in the LEGO Technic McLaren P1. Given the enormity of this challenge, Silverstone was the perfect setting, considering McLaren's rich history at the home of British motorsport.
"Having worked on the original P1 program for McLaren, it’s incredible to see how many elements of the original McLaren P1™ come to life so realistically thanks to the LEGO Technic team in this full-scale model. The car was an icon of its time. I hope that through this collaboration with the LEGO Group, we can inspire the next generation of designers and engineers to push the boundaries of automotive innovation," explains Ben Gulliver, Director of Testing and Development at McLaren Automotive.
"This project is the latest in a long line of collaborations between the LEGO Group and McLaren, bringing together McLaren engineers and the LEGO Model Production team from conception to final build. McLaren's automotive and engineering expertise has been invaluable in helping us produce a model as true to the original McLaren P1 as possible, allowing us to turn a dream into reality," details Lukáš Horák, Senior Facilities Project Manager at LEGO Group.
