Leganés is the third and final team to be relegated to the Second Division despite winning their match at Butarque against Valladolid, as Espanyol did not falter in their fixture against Las Palmas. Throughout the week, it was known that the relegation battle would be a coin toss where both teams were up against the two already relegated sides. However, the Madrid team had the slight disadvantage of relying on a slip-up from Manolo González's side, which did not occur.

The "Pepineros" were dominant at Butarque against Valladolid, who had no chance of stopping them from doing their homework. A 3-0 lead at halftime meant that Leganés fans and players tuned in to what was happening in Barcelona. Espanyol was struggling to score, which increased hope for the team from southern Madrid.

However, Espanyol managed to score through Javi Puado, via a controversial penalty, the goal that dispelled the relegation fears. The Catalans had only collected 1 point from the last 18 in the league, and this goal was a fair reflection of Manolo González's season, despite the tough final stretch. The second goal by Pere Miila ensured the team's objective of staying in the top flight for another year.

Leganés was unfortunate throughout the season, and this victory came too late, as the 40 points they have amassed are not enough to remain in the top tier for another season. Their victory at Barcelona's ground will be remembered, being one of the three teams to have won at the champion's fortress.
