Applications such as Google Maps or Waze identify and alert users to the location of fixed and mobile speed cameras, as well as police checkpoints; these apps are commonly found on any driver's mobile phone. However, the DGT's drones and helicopters remain untraceable.
At least until now. The internet has been abuzz with comments about a recent application called HeliCops, which, although primarily designed for Tesla cars, is also functional in vehicles with a navigator. This means it can be used on mobile phones. Its creation is supported by ADSBExchange, a platform that provides access to information related to flights and air traffic.
Thus, the user who launched this new tracker has announced that if it proves successful, a unique application for iOS and Android devices will be developed. The app offers precise real-time tracking of the DGT's helicopters. It displays the location of aerial speed cameras and its use is private, meaning the location is not stored and users' activities remain completely anonymous.
However, it is unclear whether its use is legal. It should be noted that the DGT only permits the use of so-called speed camera alert apps like those mentioned earlier (Google Maps or Waze), as using detectors (such as HeliCops) is illegal and results in a €200 fine and the loss of three points on the driving licence.
