This Wednesday, November 13, the CEU Cardenal Herrera University, in collaboration with the University of Alicante, will hold the International Conference on the Legal Protection of Minors and the Elderly. The conference will bring together academics and legal professionals to analyze and propose solutions to the vulnerabilities and legal challenges faced by both minors and the elderly in current contexts.
The event, which will take place in the Aula Magna of the Carmelitas campus in Elche, is co-directed by Javier Barceló Doménech, Professor of Civil Law at the University of Alicante, and María Dolores Cano Hurtado, Associate Professor of Civil Law at UCH-CEU.
The conference will begin at 10:00 am with an opening session by the academic authorities of UCH-CEU. Enrique Centeno González, Vice-Rector of the Elche Campus, will be accompanied by Esperanza Ferrando Nicolau, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Business and Political Science at UCH-CEU, and Ana Isabel Mateos Ansótegui, Vice-Dean of the same faculty.
Subsequently, Kathia Yudily Villarreal Rodríguez, Professor of Civil Law at UDEM University of Monterrey (Mexico), will deliver a lecture titled "To Ensure the Best Interests of the Child, We Must Go Beyond the Law," in which she will address the need to strengthen children's rights beyond current legal frameworks. This session will be presented by the co-director of the conference, María Dolores Cano Hurtado.
The second lecture of the morning, "The Protection of the Rights of the Elderly: Current Situation and Future Perspectives," will be delivered by Manuel Ángel de las Heras García, Professor of Civil Law at the University of Alicante, and will be presented by Javier Barceló Doménech. This segment will delve into the current challenges affecting the elderly population and the opportunities to improve their legal protection.
The conference will be structured into two round tables. The first, scheduled for 12:30 pm, will focus the debate on the "legal protection of the elderly in situations of special vulnerability." Topics will include discrimination in the health sector and the testamentary rights of elderly people with disabilities. Speakers will include Javier Barceló Doménech, Beatriz Hermida Bellot, and Purificación Cremades García, with moderation by Esperanza Ferrando Nicolau.
After a lunch break, the second round table will begin at 4:00 pm and will address the "legal protection of minors as vulnerable individuals." Topics such as conflicts arising from religious education in marital crises and the issue of international child abduction will be discussed. Speakers in this session include Remigio Beneyto Berenguer, María Rosa García Vilardell, and María Dolores Cano Hurtado, with moderation by Javier Barceló Doménech.
This event is organized within the framework of the Research Group "Public Order Issue: Current Legal Problems COP" of the Faculty of Law, Business and Political Science at CEU Cardenal Herrera University. Additionally, it is part of the project PID2022-139899OB-I00 "New Challenges of Biomedical Law in the Civil-Legal Protection of the Elderly," funded by MCIN/AEI and FEDER, which aims to analyze emerging challenges in the legal protection of the elderly in the health context.
