No surprise, but still great news: LeBron James will continue to defend the interests of the Los Angeles Lakers. The Akron-born star has exercised the 'player option' in his contract, allowing him to keep wearing purple and gold throughout the 2025-26 season. This will mark the small forward's twenty-third season in the NBA, setting a new record in the world's premier competition by surpassing the 22-season record previously shared with Vince Carter.

LeBron will earn $52.6 million for what will be his eighth season with the Lakers, a franchise he joined in the summer of 2018 from the Cleveland Cavaliers. He won the championship ring with them in 2024, his fourth personal title after the two consecutive ones he secured during his time with the Miami Heat (2012 and 2013) and the one he achieved in 2016 as the leader of a Cavaliers team that also included Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love.

Despite the disappointment of last season, where the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, LeBron believes the Los Angeles franchise, now owned by TWG Global, a conglomerate led by businessman Mark Walter, offers a suitable environment to compete for the NBA title again alongside Luka Doncic, who is expected to one day inherit the King's legacy.

"He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands it but values a real opportunity to win it all. We greatly appreciate the collaboration we've had over eight years with Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka and consider the Lakers a crucial part of his career," said his agent, Rich Paul, after confirming LeBron's continuation in California.

Robert Parish's Record Within Reach

Doncic will have to wait, therefore, to become the undisputed flagship of the Lakers, a status LeBron James will maintain for at least another season. At 40 years old, and after fulfilling the dream of playing alongside his son Bronny, he still sees himself capable of adding brilliant chapters to a legendary career.

After shattering countless records, including the NBA's all-time scoring record, the forward will break the tie he held with Vince Carter as the only players to have spent 22 years in the league. He could also become the player with the most games played, as he is just 50 games away from reaching the 1,611 mark set by Robert Parish, the legendary center who won three rings with the Boston Celtics alongside Larry Bird and Kevin McHale, and one more with Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls.
