At least 53 people have died and 62 have been injured following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale that occurred on Tuesday morning in Dingri County, located in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China.
The Xinhua news agency reported that the injured are in varying degrees of severity and that thousands of houses have been damaged, with many near the epicentre having collapsed. Regional authorities have launched a second-level response.
Following the earthquake, which occurred after 9:00 a.m. local time (2:00 a.m. Spanish peninsular time) at a depth of ten kilometres, about fifty aftershocks have been recorded, most of them below 3.0 magnitude.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered "all possible efforts to conduct search and rescue" for the population. He has also called for treating the injured, minimising casualties, preventing secondary disasters, and relocating those affected.
"We must strengthen earthquake monitoring and early warning, allocate emergency rescue materials in a timely manner, repair damaged infrastructure as soon as possible, organise basic housing arrangements for people, and ensure a safe and warm winter," he declared.
Meanwhile, Chinese Premier Li Qiang has urged to "accelerate the verification" of victims and damages, as the earthquake-affected area is in a high-altitude and cold region. "It is winter, and we must do everything possible to ensure the basic livelihood and warmth of the population in the disaster area," he added.
The governor of Dingri, Tashi Dundup, stated that the safe evacuation of the population has been organised to avoid the impact of the earthquake's aftershocks, while agents have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations.
