La Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has launched a search tool on its website to locate vehicles affected by DANA on interurban roads.
Estimates suggest that 120,000 vehicles were affected by DANA, with 98% likely to be scrapped and permanently deregistered.
Currently, the list includes 2,500 vehicles that were on interurban roads during DANA and have been removed and stored in various depots by the Civil Guard Traffic Group.
Thus, those affected can visit the website, in the section created for extraordinary procedures, a search tool (https://www.dgt.es/nuestros-servicios/afectados-dana/vehiculos-dana/) to locate where the affected vehicles are stored.
For these 2,500 vehicles, as well as those with an open claim file with the Insurance Compensation Consortium (a total of about 104,000), Traffic is proceeding with a temporary deregistration to benefit the vehicle owner, suspending certain obligations such as the road tax due on January 1, 2025, or the requirement to pass the vehicle inspection.
Whether or not their vehicle is on the list, owners must contact the Insurance Compensation Consortium to initiate the claim process and arrange for the vehicle's removal or transfer to one of the 84 authorised treatment centres in the region.
Other vehicle owners affected by DANA who have not yet been identified by the Insurance Compensation Consortium or the relevant authorities in the Valencian Community can also request a temporary deregistration free of charge by filling out a simple form on the DGT website while the compensation claims for vehicle damage or repair are processed.
This procedure can also be carried out via phone at 060, in person at the Provincial Traffic Headquarters in Valencia and Alzira, or through administrative managers, who are regular collaborators with the Administration in these administrative procedures.
All affected vehicles will have a note in the vehicle register as "affected by DANA" to prevent their circulation without passing the vehicle inspection and to avoid potential fraud in the second-hand market.
In anticipation of the high number of vehicles that may be abandoned in various locations in the affected areas, the Insurance Compensation Consortium, in coordination with the DGT, the Ministry of Industry, and the Spanish Association of Vehicle Dismantling and Recycling (AEDRA), is designing a swift removal and destruction process to help restore normality in the area as quickly as possible.
In cases where, after being temporarily deregistered, vehicles can be taken to a workshop for recovery, an extraordinary vehicle inspection must be passed, and the vehicle must be re-registered, also free of charge, in agreement with the insurer and the Consortium.
Conversely, if the owner, upon locating the vehicle and assessing the damage, decides to remove it from circulation, they must contact an Authorised Environmental Treatment Centre for its destruction. These centres are the only ones authorised to decontaminate and destroy vehicles according to environmental criteria and to issue the corresponding destruction certificate to the vehicle owner.
Once the definitive deregistration information is recorded in the DGT Vehicle Register, it will be provided to municipalities for updating their fleet and managing the road tax.
In addition to temporary or permanent deregistration, in the section enabled on the DGT website, a duplicate driving licence can also be requested in case of loss or destruction, which will be sent to the address listed in the DGT's General Driver Register or to the Provincial Traffic Headquarters. Next week, a duplicate of the vehicle registration and technical sheet in digital format can also be requested.
