The European Union (EU) will bolster aid to Gaza with the provision of €120 million in humanitarian assistance in 2025. The announcement aligns with the initial ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas to end hostilities in the Strip, a pact the European Commission hopes will ensure humanitarian aid reaches Gazan citizens. The EU will send food, medicines, medical equipment, water, and sanitary products to Gaza, aiming to provide shelter and security to the vulnerable population.
Thus, the EU raises its aid to Gaza to €450 million since 2023. Concurrently, the bloc has initiated an air bridge that has delivered nearly 3,800 tonnes of aid. Nonetheless, most humanitarian aid has remained blocked at the Rafah crossing, as frequently denounced by the former EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell. "The humanitarian situation remains bleak in Gaza," stated the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on social media.
In this regard, the bloc hopes the ceasefire will allow humanitarian aid to be channelled through the Rafah crossing and enter the Strip. The EU's Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Anouar El Anouni, highlighted on Thursday that the EU "welcomes the ceasefire agreement in Gaza" and hopes it will "end the humanitarian crisis" in the Strip, where the situation is "catastrophic." He also expressed confidence in improving cooperation with local authorities at the Rafah border crossing to expedite aid entry. In the long term, Brussels "is committed to a lasting peace solution in the region, which involves the two-state solution," added El Anouni.
The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, who on Wednesday described the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas as "an important and positive step towards ending violence," will meet tomorrow with the Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohamad Mustafa, who is in Brussels and met with the President of the European Council, António Costa, on Wednesday.
