Postiguet Beach is no longer a beach, but a lagoon. This unique phenomenon has been caused by the works being carried out by the Directorate General of Coasts to remove the current breakwater and build a new one that will improve water regeneration and stabilize Postiguet Beach. The operations began on February 10, initially dismantling the current structure to reuse the material for the new construction.
This is why a passage has been constructed between the coastline and the breakwater stones to allow heavy machinery to transit during this initial phase. This structure has closed Cocó Beach, transforming it into almost a lagoon, separated from the rest of the sea by a thin line of sand on its southern part.
A curious sight that the people of Alicante will only be able to enjoy for a limited time, while the old breakwater is removed and the new one is constructed in the form of a rock barrier. Afterwards, part of the current Cocó area will be filled with sand, and the rest will be added with the same width to Postiguet Beach.
The future of Postiguet will be marked by this new breakwater in the form of a rock barrier that will measure more than 180 meters. The main difference is its placement; while the current one is parallel to the sand, this will be perpendicular, marking the end of the beach, with a slight L-shape at the end.
This project will not only reduce the progressive loss of sand suffered by the famous Alicante beach, but it will also gain between 240 and 205 meters of sand, which will remain stable. Thus, the well-known Cocó area will gain safety for swimming, while also eliminating other issues such as isolating the recreational area from the stormwater drain at the end of the beach and improving water quality in the area.
The project has a budget of 653,400 euros (including VAT) and a completion period of six months, meaning this summer will be different for Alicante residents and tourists visiting the beach. The awarded company, Poiser Management, S.L, will be responsible for the new breakwater.
Moreover, this new structure ensures that the minimum beach width at Postiguet will be 35 meters. However, we will have to wait to see the effect, as it will be the sea's own action that will gradually move the sand from one side to the other, altering the shape familiar to many Alicante residents.
