Monday morning proved to be highly challenging for road traffic in the province of Alicante, particularly in much of the Marina Baixa region, due to an accident involving two lorries on the AP-7, within the municipality of l'Alfàs del Pi. The incident forced the closure of one of the fast lane's lanes towards Valencia, redirecting a significant portion of traffic flow to the N-332, resulting in severe traffic jams in the towns of Benidorm, l'Alfàs del Pi, and Altea.
According to sources from the Provincial Fire Consortium, the accident occurred shortly after half-past seven in the morning at kilometre point 645 of the AP-7 heading towards Valencia. One of the two lorries involved ended up blocking the lane, preventing normal traffic flow on that road.
The Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) dispatched several fire and medical assistance units to the accident site. Firefighters had to extricate the driver of one of the lorries, who was trapped inside the vehicle, before initiating his transfer by ambulance to a medical facility. The driver of the other lorry was also injured.
Additionally, one of the heavy vehicles lost its load, which was scattered across the AP-7's asphalt, and the crash also damaged part of the road's safety barrier (guardrail).
As of eleven in the morning, more than three hours after the accident, and according to information available on the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) website, the right lane (towards Valencia) of the AP-7 remains closed at the accident site. Consequently, other roads in Marina Baixa, especially the N-332, continue to experience significant congestion.
