Kike Salas was arrested on Tuesday for his alleged involvement in an illegal betting scheme. The Sevilla footballer reportedly orchestrated receiving yellow cards to allow those close to him to profit from bets, as reported by 'El Confidencial'.
The Sevilla youth player has given a statement before a court in Morón de la Frontera regarding a suspected fraud offence, before being released.
Apparently, the Sevilla defender had agreed with two friends, who are also under investigation, to deliberately receive yellow cards during league matches. This arrangement allowed Salas's associates to place bets with insider knowledge of the events on the pitch. The matches under scrutiny took place towards the end of last season.
The National Police unit specialising in illegal betting is conducting the investigation into the alleged criminal activities, focusing on several matches where Sevilla had no significant stakes, being comfortably positioned in the league table, away from both relegation and European qualification spots.
Kike Salas received seven yellow cards in the matches Sevilla played between matchday 30 and matchday 38 of the last league season, making him the most booked player during that period. Some of these bookings occurred in the final minutes of the aforementioned matches.
