Kevin Durant, one of the biggest stars still playing in the NBA, made headlines this Sunday with one of the most significant trades of the year, announcing that he will join the Houston Rockets next season. The forward, who boasts an impeccable past with two championship rings with the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018 and the MVP of both finals, as well as another MVP in the regular season with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2014, aims to enhance his record by strengthening the second-ranked team in the Western Conference.
The agreement will involve a trade where the Rockets receive Durant and the Phoenix Suns acquire Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Houston's first-round pick, which is number 10, and five second-round picks in the NBA draft. Both teams benefit from this negotiation, which is why the Suns have chosen to accept this proposal over others reportedly from the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs.
Durant will reunite with a familiar face in Ime Udoka, the Rockets' coach, who previously worked with the forward during his time with the Brooklyn Nets. Udoka will aim to maximize the potential of his new star, who, despite his age (36), continues to maintain 'all-star' averages. His average of 26.6 points, 6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists will add quality and experience to a team that failed to advance far in the playoffs this season due to the excessive youth of some players who could not rise to the occasion at the crucial moment.
This trade could mark one of the last dances for Kevin Durant, who has not been on a serious championship-contending team for years. Nevertheless, for the Rockets franchise, having this living legend is a tremendous honor. Throughout history, great players like James Harden, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Yao Ming have played for this team. Durant will join that list, but he will strive to earn a place in the hearts of his new fans.
