Kate Middleton reappeared this weekend for the first time since announcing the end of her chemotherapy treatment in September. On Saturday night, the Princess of Wales attended the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall with her husband, Prince William, and King Charles III. This important event in the Windsor agenda also saw the presence of Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Tim Laurence, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Gloucester.
On Sunday, Kate also joined the events at the Cenotaph War Memorial in London for Remembrance Day, to commemorate British soldiers who died in the line of duty. The return to official duties for the Princess was marked by another absence, that of Queen Camilla, who is on leave due to a lung infection.
On Saturday night, we saw Kate with her hair down and smiling, but at the Sunday event, she appeared sober and restrained, trying to hold back tears. Wearing a black military-style jacket with the traditional three red poppies, a black hat with feather details and a netted veil, and her hair tied back, the wife of the heir to the throne participated in the tribute to the fallen alongside Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.
During the Festival of Remembrance, Kate had her husband by her side at all times. However, at the cenotaph ceremony, Charles III and his son William participated alongside Princess Anne and several political representatives in the floral tribute commemorating the Armistice of World War I, so the Princess was supported by the Duchess of Edinburgh, who accompanied her with an affectionate gesture as they left the balcony from which they watched the event, placing her hand on the back of the King's daughter-in-law.
Last March, the Royal Household announced that Kate Middleton had cancer, without further details. Since then, we had only seen her in public in June at Buckingham Palace to attend the parade in honor of King Charles's birthday and at the Wimbledon tennis tournament final. In September, a video was released from the palace in which the Princess personally conveyed that she had successfully completed chemotherapy treatment, although she was not yet fully recovered. Since then, it has emerged that the wife of Prince William plans to resume her royal duties, prioritizing quality over quantity, choosing events with great symbolism and impact. Her attendance at the activities in memory of the fallen on two consecutive days marked her official return to the public agenda.
However, the joy was not complete for the Windsors as Queen Camilla's absence was noted. An initial statement reported that she would have a brief sick leave due to a lung infection, although her reappearance was expected this weekend. A second statement raised concerns about her condition by confirming that she would not be able to participate in the Remembrance Day events. "Following medical advice to ensure a full recovery from a seasonal respiratory infection and to protect others from any potential risk, Her Majesty will not attend this weekend's commemorative events. While this is a source of great disappointment for the Queen, she will celebrate the occasion privately at home and looks forward to returning to her public duties early next week," the statement read.
A new setback in one of the toughest years for the British monarchy. This was confessed by Prince William during his official trip to South Africa where he presented the Earthshot Awards. "It has been terrible. It has probably been the most difficult year of my life. So trying to get through everything else and keep everything in place has been really complex," he confessed while saying he was "very proud of my wife and my father for having done things the way they have, although from a personal and family point of view it has been brutal."
