Un juzgado de guardia de Valls (Tarragona) has opened an investigation into the death of a two-year-old boy. The incident occurred this past Tuesday in Valls, in an industrial estate. The child lost his life after being left in the car for between 4 and 5 hours during a heatwave. Temperatures in the area have been around 35-40 degrees Celsius. It appears to be a case of negligence by the father, who parked the car and went to work, leaving the child inside. By the time he realised or someone raised the alarm, the child had already stopped breathing.
Valls paid tribute to the child on Wednesday. Around 150 people, including family, friends, and parents of the nursery school classmates, gathered at the town hall. A minute's silence was held to remember the child's death, which has caused pain and shock in the Tarragona locality. "We are saddened; it has been a tragedy for the city, we have never experienced anything like this," said the mayor, Dolors Farré. The father is expected to give a statement on Wednesday at the Mossos police station. He is being investigated for negligent homicide. The duty judge is awaiting the Mossos d'Esquadra's report in the coming days.
