June 2025 shattered all records. The average temperature was 23.6°C, surpassing the previous hottest June in 2017 by 0.8°C. This was confirmed on Tuesday by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) after analysing the 30 full days of last month. Aemet added on its X account that June was "extremely hot" and exceeded the 1991-2020 period average by a remarkable 3.5°C.
Still in the midst of the heatwave that began last Saturday, June saw striking records such as the 46°C maximum reached in El Granado (Huelva) or nearly 45°C in Alconchel, Badajoz. The heat offered no respite at night, with minimums around 28 degrees in Cabo de Creus (Gerona) and Osuna (Seville), or 30 degrees in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria.
June 2025 is also the most anomalously warm month in the historical series, according to provisional data. No month until now had been 3.5°C above its normal average. It surpasses October 2022 and February 2020, the most anomalously warm months until now.
Additionally, the average temperature of June 2025 (23.6°C) was higher than the normal average for July and August (23.1°C and 23°C, respectively). This is the first time this has happened. "If a July or August had an average temperature of 23.6°C, it would be considered warm," Aemet notes on its official account of the former Twitter.
With provisional data, nine days in June 2025 set records for warm days on their respective dates. In an unaltered climate, around five records of warm days (and another five of cold days) would be expected in the entire year.
There are other concerning data: the waters of the western Mediterranean exceed 26°C, even occasionally reaching 28 to 30°C. In the eastern Cantabrian Sea, they hover around 22 to 24°C. These are temperatures 5 to 6°C higher than usual for this time of year, setting records in the Balearic Sea.
