Heat in Alicante offers a respite following recent episodes of high temperatures, which have even resulted in a fatality due to heatstroke this Thursday in Callosa d'en Sarria—where the highest temperature of the day was recorded (36 ºC)—at least in terms of alerts.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has lifted the yellow warnings, although it warns that minimum temperatures at night will remain notably high, especially in the pre-coastal areas.

In fact, in some municipalities of the region, nights will transition from tropical to equatorial, an even more extreme level where the minimum temperature does not drop below 25 ºC. This means that even during the coolest hours of the night, the heat remains oppressive.

This phenomenon is common in tropical regions near the equator, such as the Caribbean or parts of Africa and South America, where temperatures are high and humidity is very high throughout the year. However, in recent years, some areas of the Mediterranean and southern Europe have also begun to experience equatorial nights sporadically.

Equatorial nights pose a greater health risk than tropical ones. The human body cannot recover adequately during sleep, which increases accumulated fatigue and can exacerbate pre-existing conditions, especially in the elderly or those with chronic illnesses.

The increasingly frequent occurrence of these phenomena in areas where they were previously non-existent is a clear symptom of global climate evolution. Understanding their significance is crucial to adapting to new scenarios and taking measures to help reduce their impacts.

A woman dies from heat in the province

July has started in the worst way with the death of a 53-year-old woman from heatstroke while engaging in outdoor activity in a mountainous area of Callosa d'en Sarrià, in the province of Alicante. According to the Ministry of Health, the victim was attended to on-site by a team from the Emergency Medical Care Service (SAMU) and later transferred to the Marina Baixa Hospital in La Vila Joiosa, where she ultimately passed away.

The health ministry has confirmed that it is a case compatible with heatstroke, meeting the criteria established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Additionally, the ministry has reported another death related to high temperatures: a 52-year-old man who died last Tuesday, July 1, in the province of Castellón.

Both cases highlight the real risk posed by high temperatures, especially during outdoor physical activities or in areas with difficult access. Health authorities remind the public of the importance of taking extreme precautions during intense heat days and avoiding prolonged sun exposure, particularly during the central hours of the day.
