Judges and prosecutors have commenced a strike that will continue until next Thursday. The stoppages have already led to the suspension of hundreds of trials scheduled for today in the Comunitat. Many of these have been postponed indefinitely.
Thus, the magistrates of the Third Section of the Provincial Court of Valencia have joined the strike, resulting in the suspension of two sexual assault trials scheduled for this morning. In contrast, the judge of the dana has chosen not to join the strike and is continuing with the process as planned, including today's scheduled statements.
Trials have also been suspended in the court of first instance in Sagunto, and the 3rd court in Valencia has not held its sessions either. The suspension of trials and proceedings is notably significant in the courts of the Comunitat. For instance, in the commercial courts, of the thirteen hearings scheduled for today, only seven have taken place, with the rest being suspended or cancelled.
Empty corridors
Walking through the corridors of the City of Justice reveals the impact of the strike called for today and the coming days. The screens displaying the trials in progress are marked in red, indicating that the trials that should be taking place now are delayed. These delays affect the social courts, the criminal section, the provincial court, and the civil jurisdiction.
Additionally, the corridors of the City of Justice are filled with those affected by the stoppages. Lawyers have travelled in vain, and witnesses, defendants, and complainants have arrived at their appointed locations only to find the doors closed due to today's strike.
However, determining the extent of participation will be challenging as the General Council of the Judiciary does not recognise the right to strike and therefore will not provide data. The organising bodies will offer data, but only at a national level.
In any case, the perception is that the strike is receiving widespread support. Gonzalo Sancho from the Professional Association of the Judiciary asserts that many trials and proceedings have had to be suspended due to the strike's significant participation.
Similarly, Pablo Luján from the Francisco de Vitoria Association has stated that the strike is experiencing considerable support.
