San Juan's Home Care Service (SAD) workers have demanded pay parity this Tuesday. They claim that in July 2024, they were promised to earn the same as their colleagues under a different agreement for over two years. The disparity within the municipal company PYCSA can mean up to 4,300 euros less annually despite performing the same duties as their colleagues.
According to the workers, the ball is now in the court of the San Juan City Council. They have expressed gratitude for the support received from the municipal company PYCSA, which they believe "has done everything possible to make this pay parity a reality."
It is the City Council that they urge to end this situation, which has been addressed on numerous occasions in municipal plenaries, "where the opposition has urged the government team to expedite the procedures," they expressed in a statement. They denounce that to date the only response has been "we are working on it," without a definitive solution being specified, they claim.
"We appreciate that work is being done on it and we trust that sooner or later it will become a reality, but every month that passes without the pay parity being applied is another month of injustice for us. Our work is essential and should be recognized as such," laments one of the affected workers.
Despite the importance of their work, the SAD Dependency workers feel that their work continues to go unrecognized. "We give our all every day caring for our elders, and yet we are still waiting to be paid what we deserve. It's frustrating," another service worker complains.
"PYCSA has done its part and supported us at all times. Now it is only necessary for the City Council to unblock the situation. We have families to support, and this pay disparity is taking its toll," explains another affected worker.
Therefore, the workers call on the local administration to expedite the procedures and make the pay parity effective without further delay. With a political agreement already reached and the technical support of the municipal company, they believe there is no justification for prolonging this situation of inequality.
"We only ask for what is fair: to earn the same as our colleagues for the same work. We cannot wait any longer," they conclude.
