José F. Peláez, a journalist and opinion columnist, has been announced as the winner of the fifth edition of the David Gistau Journalism Award, which was decided today. The award, jointly established by Vocento and Unidad Editorial, highlights the literary quality and informative value of opinion pieces and pays tribute to the career of David Gistau.
José F. Peláez received the award for his opinion piece 'A Proximity Progress', published in ABC on 19 November 2023. The jury noted that "the article captures a social trend with humour, refreshes the classic view of Spanish columnism, and uses perplexity and self-parody as tools to connect with its readers."
In this fifth edition of the award, which carries a prize of 10,000 euros and is sponsored by Fundación ACS and Santander, nearly 200 journalistic opinion pieces published or broadcast in print, online, radio, or television between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024, in Spanish, were submitted.
The jury for this edition was chaired by Gonzalo Suárez, chief editor of El Mundo, and comprised esteemed professionals from journalism and culture: Ignacio Camacho, ABC contributor; Isabel Gutiérrez, journalist and head of International at ABC; Rosario Pérez, culture editor at ABC; Jesús García Calero, director of ABC Cultural; Leyre Iglesias, deputy opinion editor at El Mundo; Charo Lagares, deputy director of La Lectura; and Pablo Gil, chief culture editor at El Mundo.
Journalist and writer Alberto Olmos was the winner of the first edition of the David Gistau Journalism Award for his article "Things the Poor Should Know", published in the digital newspaper "El Confidencial". Philosopher and writer Diego S. Garrocho won the second edition of the award for his article 'Letter to a Postmodern Youngster', published in 'El Español'. Juan Claudio de Ramón received the award in the third edition for his column 'Am I a Feminist?', published in the newspaper El Mundo. In the last edition, the winner was writer and columnist Karina Sainz Borgo, for her column 'Even if You Say Otherwise', published in the newspaper ABC.
