After more than twenty years dedicated entirely to professional football, and upon retiring, Antena 3 proposed a new programme to Joaquín alongside his family to make up for lost time. The former Betis player accepted and had to organise a surprise trip for his wife, Susana Saborido, whom he met 25 years ago, and their two daughters along the West Coast of the United States. However, what the companions did not expect was that the former footballer decided to make most of the journey in a caravan. The four of them would have to share the trip and life in a space of less than twenty square metres for many hours.

'The Captain in America' begins this way, the format arriving this Wednesday on Antena 3 (premiere at 22:45) where the Sánchez Saborido family will experience unforgettable moments, such as discovering a luxurious mansion in Beverly Hills; living in an authentic Federal Reserve with a Navajo family; participating in an exciting rodeo worthy of a film or getting married in Las Vegas. The adventure will culminate in San Francisco, where Joaquín will celebrate his birthday surrounded by his family, in an atmosphere full of surprises, including a very special one that Susana has secretly prepared for weeks.

The former footballer describes the filming experience as 'brutal' as it was also the first time he travelled so far with the entire family. 'We try to show who we are, how we live day to day, in a new experience for us where we didn't know what was going to happen. And everything happened to us,' Joaquín laughs, who at times had to drive up to seven hours in the caravan. In total, more than 3,000 kilometres on asphalt, where they visited the states of California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada on a journey full of contrasts. All this, moreover, with the complexity of the language.

'Magical Moments'

He reveals that the long hours of cohabitation led to 'magical moments'. 'We know each other better than we thought,' he admits. From the experience, Joaquín takes away the trust he now has with his daughters. 'They have opened up a little more to me. There are many times when, due to circumstances, you don't have that chat with the kids. You lose that confidence to share things. In this case, I think I've gained a little more of their trust,' explains the former football player.

After retiring from the world of football, Joaquín acknowledges that it has been difficult to leave the routine training behind: 'The only thing I've done throughout my life is play football, from a young age in the square with my friends. I've always been surrounded by a ball.' However, he admits that he has been lucky because, in one way or another, he has reinvented himself, also with the help of his work on television. 'The important thing is to end a cycle and not stay sitting on the sofa,' he argues. 'I can't ask for more from life, because I continue to enjoy football and television, and in this case much more, because I've had the luck to enjoy it with my family,' he adds.

For her part, his wife, Susana Saborido, confesses that she hesitated to film this 'road movie' because she was terrified of travelling and flying. 'But it was like being at home with them,' she reveals, who also acknowledges, jokingly, that she has discovered her family is 'more annoying' than she thought. However, she says she had a hard time during the first days of the trip in the United States and even suffered from viral conjunctivitis. 'I was doing very badly. I thought that if by the fourth day this didn't improve...' she confides. However, despite that initial anxiety, she does not regret anything.

The programme's director, Javier Ruiz, argues that 'The Captain in America' is the most authentic family reality show ever made in Spain. 'A family has never been seen with such naturalness and purity. Joaquín's family is aware of their virtues but also their flaws. And they don't intend to hide it. That's a luxury as a director,' he emphasises. For the Director of Entertainment at Atresmedia TV, Carmen Ferreiro, the format also stands out for Joaquín's humour. 'You will recognise many everyday moments that I would say happen in any family in this country,' she previews.
