With the first month of 2025 concluded, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has released its initial assessment of January, revealing a situation similar to that of 2024: high temperatures and a lack of rainfall in southern Alicante.
Aemet explains that this month "has been very warm" across the entire region and the province of Alicante, despite experiencing the coldest week in nearly two years. This episode saw temperatures plummet, bringing snow and frost from January 13th to 20th.
January 2025 has been very warm and pluvially normal in the Valencian Community. The average temperature, 9.6 °C, is 1.5 °C higher than the reference climatology, and the accumulated precipitation was 30.6 l/m², which is 30% below the normal value. pic.twitter.com/JwNfCwcIW4

One must go back to March 2023 to find lower temperatures than those recorded on those days. "Despite the very warm nature, there was a notable cold spell between January 13th and 20th, which, although it cannot be classified as a cold wave
There were two very notable warm peaks centered on the 11th and 27th. The highest values were recorded on the 27th, with 27.8 ºC in Miramar, 27.4 in Pego, 27.3 in Orihuela and Xàtiva, and 27.1 in Valencia, which is the highest temperature recorded in the city in January. pic.twitter.com/3S3SlVmpEe

All this was not enough to prevent the average from reaching 9.6 degrees, 1.5 degrees above the reference climatological mark. Thus, Aemet recalls that towns like Pego or Orihuela broke records during the two major warm peaks that occurred on the 11th and 27th, with the latter being the most intense. As a result, temperatures exceeded 27 degrees, with some localities breaking their highest figures for January.
"Both January 11th and 27th had record average temperatures in the Community for the corresponding series of each day," emphasizes Aemet, which has shared several graphs on its social media illustrating this rollercoaster of temperatures experienced in January.
Regarding rainfall, 40% of the entire region experienced a "dry or very dry" month, especially areas in southern Alicante and the Marina Baixa and Vinalopó. This contrasts with the north of the province, where Aemet describes January 2025 as "wet or very wet."
The highest accumulations in the month were recorded near the mountains of southern Valencia and northern Alicante, with 181.2 l/m² in Pinet, 148.0 in la Casella (Alzira), 145.5 in la Drova, 141.1 in l’Orxa, and 140.2 in Barx. pic.twitter.com/ac50ARG6DT

The rains from the Levante storm on January 16th and 17th brought persistent moderate intensity precipitation, with occasional heavy showers. This resulted in about 141 litres per square metre in northern Alicante in localities such as l'Orxa.
