The maritime transport company, JSV, with a terminal at the port of Alicante, has announced the acquisition of a state-of-the-art sustainable vessel powered by methanol. The new ship will be available during the second quarter of 2026 and will be introduced into its express line with the Canary Islands, departing every Friday from Alicante and arriving in Las Palmas on Mondays and Tenerife on Tuesdays.
The company details that the vessel involves an investment of 38 million euros and is designed "with cutting-edge technology, making it the most modern container ship in the traffic with the Canary Islands and much of the Mediterranean." The ship will be able to navigate waters anywhere in the world as it complies with environmental legislation.
This is a vessel prepared to store and consume methanol, a liquid fuel that reduces CO2 emissions by between 40% and 70%, virtually eliminating emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter (PM). Additionally, green methanol would allow for net-zero emissions.
In addition, the ship features charging points to connect electrically during loading and unloading operations at port, thus anticipating the regulation that will require this feature for all ships from 2030.
Its advanced propellers and rudders also stand out, allowing for more efficient navigation and enabling the ship to reduce its emissions with current fuels. Moreover, it incorporates state-of-the-art software to optimise operations based on weather conditions and a patented guide system by JSV that speeds up port operations.
The ship is equipped to transport Pallet Wide High Cube and 45' containers, offering greater width and height in all loading positions, both in the hold and on deck. With a capacity of 1,200 containers, almost 35% of the total capacity is equipped to load refrigerated containers.
New ship and homage to the origins
The new vessel will be named 'Mila Green', in honour of Milagros Sáenz, the wife of JSV's founder. The company details that the purchase of this new ship "represents one of the most significant milestones for JSV, along with the launch of the Alicante port terminal or the new route with Turkey.
"With the acquisition of this vessel, we take a giant step in our commitment to environmental respect," says the group's CEO, Sonia Herzog. The executive details that "the new ship guarantees a significant reduction in emissions and compliance, not only with current legislation but also with future environmental regulations."
